Hello everyone, I want to thank you all for their help. I really appreciate reading all the questions and answers. I now need more help with getting my cylinder head rebuilt.Photos are posted in photo album under "Laughing Gull"Question A does anyone have a good photo of a cylinder head that is not all gummed up. So we can find which holes need to be open or plugged?Question 1: On the second photo.... The head needs to be resurfaced..... Do the injector sleeves need to be removed or can they be ground flat with the surface of the head? Can we get sleeves if we need them? Heads are 30 thousands out of level. Question 2: on the first photo.... These are not where the bolts go thru, should these be more open and not be carbonized by leakage?Question 3: On photo 3... Is that a hole that is suppose to be plugged.... Or just buildup.... Or a plug...Question 4: On photo 4.... Lapping of valves of.... Back cylinder was not firing. This is the condition of valves.Have given rebuild book to mechanic and shop.... The one valve is really pushed in. So has it hit the piston.... Or just fluid buildup.... Question 5. On photo 6... Is that a casting die imprint on the circle..... Also notice that the second hole on top from the right is also plugged. should this also be open or plugged. We are assuming that all these problems are because someone tried to remove the head and failed. No way to know if or when it has ever been removed. Gasket kit has been ordered. Gaskets are also disintegrated.... The back cylinder was not firing. Severe blown head gasket on front left above the flywheel. Intake side of cylinder head was loose and rust on that side of head. Exhaust manifold was a pain to remove. We are drilling and tapping hole and studs as appropriate. Also plan on acid dipping parts to clean the insides. Plus blast the outsides since the shop has the equipment to do so.I appreciate all the help I can get on my engine.... From what I have been reading all it needs is some TLC... Cleaning new bolts and will run a long time. The pistons look good. The cylinder walls are not lipped. Mechanic has a tool to clean the top of pistons and crosshatch the walls before putting back together. The combi drive also works good. Thank you,Dale ShaferLaughing Gull # 1877

I don't have my Engine manual here it is on my boat so can't
remember how it all goes together. I suspect with the head warped
.030 the camshaft bearings are no longer straight in line. The head
bolted to the engine block had the .030 pulled flat to the block. If
you refinish it the head surface will be flat but the camshaft
bearings will be out of alignment by .030 and you will have problems
breaking camshafts. A little warpage in a head can be pulled out
when tightened down but I don't think you can pull out that much
warpage with out having head gasket problems. You need advice from
a mechanic that has worked on a lot of those engines. I have
remachined a lot of cylinder heads but never one warped that much. I
helped a young man who had remached a six cylinder auto motive head
and we had to shim up the gearing blocks to aline them so the
camshaft will not be in a bind. IF the cam shaft bearing blocks are
not seperate but are part of the cylinder head I don't think you can
fix it short of line boring the bearings and installing new oversize
ones. That would be a heck of a job. I think you may have to replace
the head.
