MD 7A

I bought a MD 7A to replace my ailing OS 11/2. It really is a 11/2; it is a late OS1 with some of the features of the OS2, such as distributor ignition.

The MD 7A needs some work. Does anyone know where I can get a shop manual and parts list for it?

Can anyone tell me what size and pitch prop to use.

Hi Mort

The VAGB has a Workshop manual for the MD6A/7 and parts can be obtained but
the price of the parts are terrible. As an example just to buy the parts to
re-build the engine is ove £1700 then the labour to go on. AT thye end of
the day you still have a 25 year old engine. The engine bearers will have
to be modified to accept the MD7A and the engine will take up about four
inches inside the main cabin due to the angle of the stern tube, in fact
the three Vegas that I have seen replace their Albin petrol with an MD6A/7
had to also replace the stern tube which is a major job. Think carefully
before you go down the road of renovating and fitting the MD7A into a
petrol Vega, a big and very expensive job with many pitfalls.

The prop needs to be 2 Blade 12 or 13x9 or 3 Blade 12x8 if you have a
conventional gearbox with about 2:1 reduction. Final sizes depend on engine
output power, weight of boat, waterline of boat, clearance form the hull to
the centre of the prop, revs of the propshaft.

Hope this helps.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the undoubtedly good advice.

However, I already have the MD7A, which I am told has low hours, and I don't think it needs much work. If it does I will junk it; I certainly won't rebuild it.

How do I order the manual?

Hi Mort

Send mne your address and I will put it in the post. Make a donation to
VAGB funds as you see fit. A travellers cheque that has been signed in UK
Pounds Sterling is the easiest way but up to you.
