"Overture lives" I was able to install the exhaust manifold this
weekend. She runs great. I do have a couple of questions. First, how
does one change the oil? I can't find a drain plug. Second, does the
anti-siphon device on the exhaust water inlet stop water getting in
to the engine or does it have a different function? Lastly, the sails
are pretty grimy after sitting unused for so many years. What's the
best way to clean them?

As always thanks to everyone for the help.

One other question. I was suprised the engine did not stop when the
key was turned off. I had to release the compression to stop the
engine. Is this normal?

Paul,
Yes that is normal. A diesel engine doesn't depend
on spark to run so it can't be shut down by turning
off the ignition key unless there is an electric fuel
pump as on a truck engine. The Vega MD6 has a 'T'
handle that controls the fuel flow. Pulling up on the
handle will shut the MD6 down but it must be pushed
back down to restart. BTW... The key should not be
turned off until after the engine stops. Although I
have never seen a problem really occur, I've been told
that if the engine is still running with the key off
there could be electrical damage to the alternator.
Can anyone out there confirm this?
Still trying to get a free Saturday morning to come
see your boat. We've had a recent influx of weekend
house guests since the weather turned hot.
Hope to talk to you soon.

Yikes

Never turn the key off untiul the engine has been stopped via the stop lever
located outside next to the engine panel on the starboard side (lift up to
stop). You may have blown the alternator....

Hi Paul

Engine oil is drained via the dipstick hole. Shove in a pipe fitted to a sump
pump. Buy them at any chandlery for about £12 or $20

Much easier if the oil is hot. Run the engine to heat it up before you start
pumping the oil out.
