I recently purchased a '93 Passage 42. Has anyone come up with a solution for the anchor locker problem? For those unfamiliar, the winch is mounted horizontally within the locker only inches from the deck of the compartment. The chain is supposed to slide forward to the main collection area which just does not happen. Gravity does not work horizontally!

option one....replace the windlass...
option two, rework the locker with a better shot to the actual area...

the others turn out not to be options if you want to use the gear

That is the job of the operator to tail the chain. A deck switch leaves the hands free for the task. Obviously not intended to be operated from the cockpit on retreival.

Thanks for stating the obvious Benny17441. The operator has to actually sit with his or her feet in the well to accomplish the task. It is neither comfortable nor safe! One wrong move and your hand is caught between the chain and the windless.

Not Safe

I have a remote for the windlass but still need to use my hand to keep the chain from building up around the windlass and than jaming up when ever retrieving the anchor.
But for sure I keep my hand away from the windlass,I know some one who got some fingers badly damaged from working the windlass.

Push Stick?

If yours is like mine on the 40.5, the switch is under the locker and , while technically 'in' the locker, can be utilized standing up. I actually run the line through the chain gypsy if I am by myself and use a stick to push the rode down as I do the chain if it doesn't fall.

Having said that, I rarely anchor so I am hardly an authority.
