Traveller replacement
I just finished replacing the traveller on my 1986 28.5. I went crazy for weeks trying to figure out how to get at the nuts on the starboard side. Then I called Hunter and they said that in some of the earlier models there were NO nuts, just a thicker backing. I tried removing them and surprise, no nuts! I replaced the Rutgerson unit with a Harken mid-range traveller kit. There are pros and cons to this. The Harken unit has cam cleats on each end that protrude out farther than the single block on the Rutgerson unit. To get clearance so that the lockers could be opened, I moved the traveller track forward onto the "ledge" just aft of the companionway (just about 2 inches forward of where the original track was). The screws in this area are all easily accessible inside, port are just ahead of the old holes and starboard are now in the head compartment. You will have to use longer screws on the starboard side as the deck is thicker (I used 2 1/2 and 3 inch SS with a large washer and nylon/SS locknut). The other problem is that the old track is on 3 inch centers while all newer tracks (even Schaeffer and Ronstan) are on 4 inch centers. If you use a different traveller configuration and try to put the new track where the old one was you will have to patch old holes and drill new ones. If you relocate the track where I did you still have to patch the old holes but you are not drilling new holes in the same area. Any other questions? Email me at aclaunch@crosslink.net. Good Luck
