The original (Maxwell) winch handles for my Hunter 31 are long gone.
I have tried using a few other brand handles and all seem to give a somewhat sloppy fit. I presume the insert diameter on the Maxwell winches is just a little larger than the norm for other brands.
I am given to understand that Maxwell has gone out of the winch business and now makes only anchor windlasses.

Does anyone know of a source for winch handles (Maxwell or other brand) that will fit properly?

Diameter is the same but depth of the shaft driver hole is less so you get the wobbly feely as the handle driver cannot lock in. I was lucky to find 10" Sea Dogs handle that fit perfectly but that was years ago. I recently tried the OneTouch but it had the same problem. Hope the attached measurements help. Suggest you ask friends around you to let you try theirs and go from there. Maybe Dave on site here can help you. As a last resort, you may also contact Allen Hutton in Australia. He has most of the parts for Maxwell winches so he may be able to set you up with handles. Here are the coordinates:

Dave, Try this websight sailes@huttonwinches.com. I just rcceived this last week. They are in Australia and they have all the Maxwell winch parts you might need. I used them last year when I rebuilt all my winches. Good luck, and Good Winds.
