After much reading and self debate I think I have decided to go with a 3 blade Maxprop(currently have 2 blade fixed) for my Catalina 34. What will I need to do to install are there any problems I which I should be aware? I have a 1988 will the engine and transmission handle this prop? How do you set the pitch and what pitch should be set I have seen from 8 to 11? I appreciate your input

Three blade

Hello Patrick, Thank you for your note. I have listed below the threads to PYI’s web site showing the installation section. As for your engine handling a new propeller, no problem. You are using a fixed blade now, when you go to the Max-Prop you will set it up so the pitch and load, that the Max-Prop produces, is apx. the same as that of the existing fixed. The pitch will be determined by what engine combination you have. If you provide the engines make and model, transmissions reduction gear and current propeller info we will be able to spec and recommend the pitch. Thank you. Kevin L. I did it on a 380!

Sounds almost indecent but with Woody's help and some friends, we changed from a fixed two blade to a three blade max prop. Woodys probably wringing his hands and saying, "Oh, God, here he goes again," but I have to say it is the best thing I did to my boat that gives me pleasure. It will make your motor run smoother, you can parallel park your boat and you can go through chop much easier. With that said: You will have to cut your shaft so have a good hacksaw available. I didn't and it was a problem. Have also a prop puller to get your old one off. Setting the pitch for your Max prop is easy before you put it on, but no matter the entire episode shouldn't be at all stressful. We didn't follow Woody's advice on the pitch and had to be haul out later on to change it. But it has been one great addition to the boat. Did you know that this prop is standard equipment on Swans. Tell us later how your new prop is working.

Why Cut the shaft Les?

Kevin or Les, Just curious, why did you have to cut the shaft on your 380 to install a maxprop? I would think it just be a matter of swapping off the old for the new and making sure your pitch was adjusted properly. Thanks for the info Bob Knott H380

Memory, don't fail me now

Hi, Bob. Kevin can give a better answer when he comes back on board after the weekend. But I'll try to reconstruct what we did. After taking off the old prop, we slid the new one on; I believe is has a tapered hole through the center. Once on, you put on a nut which you tighten. At that point, you have to cut the shaft because the next step to to add a special type of zinc which is attached with three special screws. The zinc brings the aft part to a point which my colleagues in the Physics department says will decrease the need for the zinc. Being a computer jockey, I don't understand. Anyway, when we did mine, I forgot this little part of the instructions and all I had was a very dull blade on my hacksaw. It took three of us to get it cut while the crane crew waited for us to finish. Bad scene. I hope this makes sense. Help, Mr. Woody, help me out here.

It's just a little!

After the hub is put on the shaft, there are pieces which need to seat aft of the shaft end. The shaft needs a little trimmed of the end(less than .75 ') to make it work. The book has it as no more than 1 1/2 threads aft of the nut. Simple and fast with a 18 tooth hacksaw, and really doesn' prevent the old prop from being reinstalled.
