Can anyone tell me how to determine the max. weight a transom/stern can take when choosing an outboard motor? I have a Hun./Cher. 25 1976 that seems a bit underpowered with a two-stroke 8hp Johnson. I want to move up to a 4 stroke Suzuki or equivalent and don't want to damage the transom through torque or weight. Thank you.

Honda 9.9 on mine

I put a 2004 Honda 9.9 electic start, extra long shaft (28") four stroker on mine and am very pleased with it. To support the 106 pound motor I installed an extra heavy offshore model Garelick motor mount, and reinforced the inside of the transom with the largest washers I could use. The upper bolts come through the transom just above the "shelf" that the gas can sits on, so I didn't have room to install any type of reinforcement. The transom seems plenty sturdy as it is, with no signs of deflection, cracking, etc. The weight of the engine does cause the stern to squat, so I plan to remove the central a/c from under the cockpit and install it forward under the v-berth to distribute the weight better & bring her bow back down into trim.
