I think it depends on what boat you have and typical wind conditions. On some boats the change gives more area in percentage terms than others - I have a 331 and would only pick up 6% more overall square footage. The extra area helps in light air but is not needed in 10 knots and up. Some will argue better shape however I suspect the skill of the captain can have more impact.
Why not consider a rollaway mainsail with battens for added roach. The roach up hi allows for the top 1/3 of the sail to actually work, especially in lighter winds, instead of tubing out at the top.
