Doe any one know if this diesel we are putting in can use the same maxi prop on the boat , or is the prop not adequate for the size diesel, I am trying to save on the cost of a new shaft and prop and cutlass bearing, unless nessicary. Any ideas out there on this? Tim

Does the Kubota have a transmission?

I assume you are going from the MD6 Volvo to the new engine. If so you might
be able to just repitch the Maxprop. The shaft is certainly big enough if it
is a 25mm shaft. I've installed several Maxprops and the shaft size was
always OK.

Get all the measurements for your boat, and existing prop and shaft, and
give PYI a call. They manufacturer the Maxprop and are the folks to talk
with. (They are actually located 10 minutes from my house in Lynnwood,
Washington.) Repitching is an easy job once you've done it a couple time.
One of the divers we worked with when I was in operations at the rigging
company used to change the pitch underwater (that always amazed me that he
could do that in our cold waters up here).

Hi Tim,
I had a fixed prop and purchased a max-prop. They are very nice props and expensive so dont toss it. lol.

I hope im not telling you stuff you already know.... but....here is my story.

When I purchased the prop, they asked me to give them the dimensions of the shaft bore.
At the end of the shaft, it is tapered in a certain way. So they machine the two parts to match this taper perfectly.

Also, I am thinking, if i remember, that the prop rests on the machined taper of the shaft only. So maybe the precise diameter of the rest of the shaft may not matter?

The max-prop is adjustable with its pitch with internal set points. So you have a range of forward and reverse pitches that you can choose. You should download the manual to see how to adjust the internal gears.

To see if the max-prop you have is in the range of the new kabota, you have to calculate or measure the rotation speed of the actual prop. To do this you look in the kabota manual and see what RPMs the kabota likes to run at for max power output and efficiency. Maybe like 3000 rpm. Then the motor RPMs get modified by a transmission for forward/reverse gear. This will be something like a 2:1 reduction of the rotations from the engine to the prop. Then you know the prop rotations.

Then you see if its a 2 or 3 wing prop, and the diameter. With these numbers you or someone in a prop shop or on line can calculate the approximate pitch you need on the max prop. Hopefully the max-prop you have will fit the calculations and have a pitch in your desired range.
