Hi all,

Has anyone sent their Max Prop out to be re-conditioned? What would be a good indicator that the prop would need this done?

Yours is a good question, I haven't had my MaxProp reconditioned and wonder what would indicate the need. My experience with Max Prop has been positive, so I would trust their recommendations. When you get them, would you share? Save their Tech Support a hundred questions on the same topic in a day or two. :)

The blades become loose and bind causing problems with feathering and deploying. Because everything is soft bronze, I assume the fix is replacement parts.

I've had experience refurbishing Martec folding props. They take the old blades and braze in/on new material and then polish and balance.

FWIW, when the tips of the Martec blades touch, it is past time to have them refurbished. The tips should be a ¼" to ⅜" apart when the prop is closed.

While on the hard mine rotate smoothly without binding. They also feel secure without any wobble to the blades. Is there any other way to decide if a recondition is necessary?

If the prop gets noisy or the blades get sloppy, it's time. You don't appear to be there yet.

I have sent mine out to PYI after about 7 years use and they replaced the conical gear as they said it was worn. Otherwise they shine it up and test it. Only thing is that they want the entire prop, including the sleeve/adapter which fits on the shaft. Not easy to remove.

I sent mine in after 13 years and they changed out and rebuilt some parts, rebalanced the blades and shined it up like new. I could wiggle the blades back and forth and that is how you tell if it is worn or not. Total cost was around $750 as I recall. Well worth the rebuild and the MaxProp folks are Aplus!
