Max prop issues

I just had a new Max Prop reversible-pitch prop installed by the yard on my Cal 36 sloop. When I engage forward, the boat moves astern. When reverse is engaged, the boat moves ahead. The yard mechanic says the shaft is tapered, so the prop can’t be installed backwards. An old salt thinks the prop was fabricated backwards. Has anyone experienced this problem?

This didn't happen to me when I had my MaxProp installed several years ago. Not sure how they'd fabricate it backwards.

LH prop on a Right Hand application?
Sounds like the blades are going to the wrong position when un-feathering. I am not familiar with that prop and whether it can be fixed in place.

Which model Max Prop did you buy?

For the sake of this discussion, I'll assume it was a Max Prop Easy model. The direction of rotation on this (and all Max Prop models) is (as you stated initially), reversible. This is fairly easy to do on the Easy model and can be done underwater but if it's me, I want a really competent hull diver to do it. Here's how it works:

There are a lot of max props in use, you might consider calling PYI tomorrow. Very helpful staff I suspect they will have an answer for you.

I have had MaxProps on two sailboats for about 30 years, so I have experience with them, to say the least. Your yard installed the prop incorrectly. The boat needs to be hauled and the problem corrected. There is a step in the installation where the blades are installed and they were obviously installed incorrectly, backwards. No question about it.

concur, but better he gets correct settings for the engine/trans, so this is fixed just once. The yard definitely is not up to speed.

This mistake was almost certainly made at PYI. The Max Prop Easy is shipped with pitch and rotation settings already made.

Yeah, maybe if PYI were given correct info. If the techs verified settings during during assembly. Better check now to avoid a re[peat.
