Max Motor for a 1985 Hunter 25.5

I need to replace my motor on my 25.5 ft Hunter; I have a Yamaha 8hp outboard now and it does not have enough power to puch the boat in 2-4 knot currents. I is a fixed mounting the moves up and down to drop the motor into the water and out while sailing. Is the a maximum size or weight? What else should I consider?

Hull speed on your boat is ~6 knots so in a 4 knot current, the best you can do is about 2-2.5. With that said, 10 hp would be about max for weight and stress on the motor bracket.
