Hi all! I'm a new owner of a 1995 Hunter 26. I'm thinking about getting a newer motor for it and am curious as to the max hp for that model? Thanks in advance.

The hull speed on the Hunter 26 is about 7 knots under power. It only takes a few horsepower to achieve this. If you have wind, waves, or tide to power against, more tourque is better than more horsepower.

The primary limiting factor is the weight of the outboard. The mount is designed to carry no more than a 10 (9.9) HP 4 stroke.

Many prefer long shaft high thrust versions of the 9.9 4 stroke outboards.

To add to the above - the motor can be optimized for a relatively heavy, low speed boat by changing the gearing for a lower speed (rpm) prop with a bigger diameter to get more thrust for the horsepower.

Long shaft is a must, after that choose for battery charging capability and maybe electric start. Starting is no big deal for a guy but because you have to maybe reach down over the transom to it and pull awkwardly may make it much easier for the admiral.

We had a Honda BF100 on our previous boat and loved it for quiet operation, reliability and low noise.

I had a long shaft 18hp Nissan . No reverse thrust and heavy. It did work with the Edson cables for fast slow throttle.
Replaced with Yamaha T 9.9.
The T is the important part . Extra long shaft low geared , big prop.
I can now approach the dock and add a little reverse and the barge slows. ( Amazing)
Downside the throttle linkage is backwards and I had to buy a tiller model and remove the tiller to get electric and manual start.

The Yamaha T9.9 is a nice OB. It pushes my O'day 25 quite nice at 1/2 throttle.

You asked an appropriate question and I can speak as an expert on this one. First, hull transoms are designed for outboards up to 10 hp max and do not let anyone tell you otherwise. This includes the Hunter 26 and 260. In addition which was pointed out, many outboard motor brackets will take up to a max 10 hp motor and with that you have to make sure it includes the four stroke engines as they are typically heavier as it will say on the mount itself or in the packaging. Finally, I motored many of the 26 and 260 Hunters and found the bow will raise up thus plowing thru the water and slowing down under full throttle with a 9.9 hp engine based on the boats I sold and prepped over the years as a Hunter dealer.
