How bad or good is it finding and more importantly getting in and out of Mattituck? Maptek gives a lot of warnings. I draw about 6' and would like a mooring instead of a slip. I see there is an anchorage all the way in, but is there enough water and what about the mini Hell's Gate they mention?

finding Mattituck

I recently sailed by Mattitiuck in a pretty ugly day and, while both my GPS and chartpolotter showed me it was there, i had a ahell of a time seeing it from off shore. I didn't go in, but would have had to trust my instruments 100% to get close to the entrance.

I also showed up at Mattituck on a grey day. Basically you see it but are not sure. Went a littl epast it and turned around realizing this must be the place. Check the tides as if you are draawing 6 you have to be careful. I have also heard to be very careful if it is blowing. There is a marina at the end of the inlet and a marina about 1/2 way up ( this is where we stayed) very hospitable. Also a cool restaurant (former mill) but it is closed on wednesday (just our luck!).

6' will be tough

Hello, I spent a weekend at Mattituck last year. It was easy to find with my GPS, less so with my eyes. The channel to town is long, but well marked. I arrived about 1 hour before low tide and had enough water for my boat (5' 2" draft). There were a few thin spots but no problem. We stayed at Matt A Mar marina, which has a nice pool and a nicer restaurant (too nice for my kids). There were a number of boats anchored at the end of the channel. There won't be much, if any, water under your keel there. We left to go home at dead low tide. I saw 4' on my depthfinder in a number of places. My transducer is in the bottom of my boat, so I had enough water, but not much more than that. Mattituck was nice, there is a cute main st within walking distance, but not enough to do for a weekend. Good luck, Barry

Thanks to each of you. I think I will pass on Mattituck. Is there anything else on the LI side? I'm stopping at Port Jeff on my way to Shelter Island and don't think I can make it in one day.

Been there many times. I draw 6' and as long as you use the tides it is no problem. There are a few shallow spots, but all very soft mud. There are some moorings at the end, but anchoring is easy. The place is very quite and well protected. The entrance to the channel isn't easily spotted from the Sound until you get close. Just follow your GPS right to the outer marker. From there, just follow the channel in and keep your chart handy. If you time it with a rising tide, you'll have no worries(same with departure).

Ports on North Shore

Two weeks ago when we had those very strong winds I made it from Huntington to Three Mile Harbor in a little over 12 hours, so you should be able to cover the distance -- if you pay attention to the tidal currents throught Plum Gut and the Race. Get a copy of Eldridge's and note the times and locations of maximum current. The amount of territory you cover depends an awful lot on whether the 3 1/2 knot current is helping you out or slowing you down. There is absolutely nothing on the Long Island north shore between Mt. Sinai, just east of Port Jeff, and Mattituck, and then again nothing until Orient Point. You might want to top off your fuel in Mt. Sinai or Port Jeff, to be on the safe side. On that very windy day we did not see a single boat (to say nothing of a port) for more than 20 nautical miles between Mt. Sinai and Mattituck and after one barge we saw little else until almost Orient Point.

If you think it is hard to find try it at night. About 15 yrs ago we left Watch Hill heading for Pt Jeff after waiting for the fog to lift as we had no radar. It got to be about 1100 hrs the current was against us. We arrived at Mattituck Inlet at about 2100hrs. We followed a fishing boat to the first marina and after that we just idled all the way in to the anchorage. This had been the second time we were here. Just returned from winter in the Abacos. This is a piece of cake compared to some of the harbors down there.
