Matt Rutherford's Current Challenges ....

Aug 16, 2011

All ...
We've probably all been following Matts' heroic voyage ... but as of today's update he has serious challenges regarding electrical power, an inoperative starter on his Volvo Penta 2002 engine, as well as possible concerns for water making. Please refer to his post ... and remarks of others regarding potential solutions ... and the possibility of encouraging/supporting another resupply.
Best regards,

Tom, I have read Matt's post dated Feb 21, but I couldn't see any posts by
other people regarding potential solutions or re-supply. Can you provide a
link? I sent a financial donation to CRAB in honour of Matt's effort a
while ago. I will be happy to send another ?100 to support resupply if that
would help. Can you give me the right contact. Tom Fenton V2977

Just a thought on Matt\'s resupply:
There\'s a guy (Herb, I think) in Canada that does weather routing for the Atlantic via SSB.
He might know of another boat in that area that could give Matt a hand. -Tim

The following message has been posted on the SolotheAmericas website:
"Unfortunately
it looks all the equipment breakdowns that Matt has been dealing with will
require a special resupply mission. Matt is almost without anyway to
generate power right now, and the methods that he does have won?t last the
whole way home.

Simon Edwards is currently planning a resupply out of Recife, Brasil
scheduled within a week or so. If you have any ability to help out Matt
with a small donation for the new parts it would be very much appreciated.
If you can, please click the Donate to CRAB button to the right and
contribute what you can ? every little bit helps!" Tom

I wish I could fax a copy of today's "Hagar The Horrible" comic strip to Matt! I have made a donation to the resupply mission in hopes that he will complete his voyage.

I think Matt was re-supplied off Alaska when his water makers failed. I see on the chart on his website at 0800 GMT today that he sailed in to a point about 2 miles off the coast between Recife and Olinda and is now heading out to sea again. The narrative has not been updated, but I assume this means he is continuing and that he voyage stills qualifies as single handed, non stop.

Hi

Every voyage is "assisted" in some way or another, even if it is the agreement of your other half allowing you a leave pass!!

Sail on Matt

From My own point of view, The non stop thing means little to nothing..
If he pulled in someplace and resupplied that would take nothing from
what he has done I think. If he sopped in every 500 hundred miles it
would be Ok with me. I can see though to the the much of the news
reading world the none stop thing has good stunt value. Boy O boy he
shure has my admiration if he had to quit where he is but for him
getting back to Annapolis is really a big deal in the finishing what you
start category. Doug

These things aren't well defined. Self supported means what you want it to.
His achievement has been pretty amazing so far whatever the label applied.
I remember reading one of his early posts from the north west passage about
sleep deprivation and sea ice - incredulous at his stamina and application
in very challenging waters.

Did anyone else listen to the pod cast that Mat made before his departure? You can hear it at http://www.fathersonsailing.com/ it is well worth the effort. He might never get to work for West marine again but at least we know what he thinks and how he stands. Its "The spirit of the thing" we should be looking at. "no need to own it" John.C
