Material for drive shaft packing

Hi Guy's have a 1987 40 ft Hunter legend Yanmar 4jhe engine aboard her an just had a mechanic replace all the major system on it
at a cost $ 8K exhaust from engine black back including heat exchanger , fuel injectors to tank , cooling, elect, sensors, wire harness, alter an starter an she run Great that was down in white rock marina in Pasadena MD last year
An now she in a slip up at the top of the Delaware river in PA happy in fresh water
but i have noticed that when start her up i get leakage by the prop shaft seal an i am looking to replace the inner packing does any one know what the inner packing material is an where to purchase it

The material I've always used in teflon impregnated flax. I get about 6 - 8 years out of it before thinking about repacking.

BTW I run my packing gland DRY. No dripping at rest, no dripping under way. A carefully packed gland can do this.


Don't try for the dry packing gland just yet. Get familiar with the gland. IMO, one of the major causes of a badly leaking gland is a poor packing job.

Packing size is usually determined by the shaft size and the stuffing box mfg.

The GFO teflon impregnated stuff is good. I used it on my boat until I changed to a dripless shaft seal.

Ok Thank Greg I guess a good marine repair shop would know what size packing i would need
she has a 1 1/4 drive shaft
