masthead strobe

Hello, I have one and am wondering when are they to be used and not used? foggy conditions?

emergencies only... they arent a legal nav light and if one can see the strobe, they can probably see a proper light... using one in the fog will place a high legal liability on you.... but in a real emergency, liability is the last thing you will thinking of and attracting the attention of the law will be as good as attracting the attention of any other boat that may come to your assistance.

I have one (not connected up yet) and plan on using a locking toggle switch that you need to pull out on the stem to switch positions - I don't want it accidentally turning on. Either that or one of the switch guards that you need to lift prior to switching.

funny you mention this......I am in the bahamas right now and I have seen people using strobes all night in big anchorages like georgetown.....but some where up high and some were around the cockpit.....I never payed much attention to them but I would not want to be anchored beside them......I never new of such device and I now know how you are supposed to use it...thankyou
