masthead sheave replacement

difficult to raise main. '82 cat 30 with external wire halyard. "assuming" worn out sheave? due to time might hire to inspect/repair/replace. want to have any necessary parts on hand.

if going this route might as well upgrade to internal halyard? advise/suggestions??

Garhauer is a good source for new sheaves. Probably less $$ than Catalina Direct.

To run them internally you'll need mast plates.

Go to all rope halyards. Stay Set I've found is too stretchy. Stay Set X has been reported to be completely useless - bad hand, kinks, etc. Samson line is much better. Unless you race, high test isn't needed, just basic low stretch stuff.

We sell mostly Samson XLS, a great all around line. XLS Extra, or Extra T is about 2.5 times the money, but worth it, only if you're a performance racer (in my humble opinion). And YES, Sta-setX is a miserable wiry line.

I think I need to replace the main halyard masthead sheave on a 27 ft catalina islander. I can't seem to find a diagram but I would assume there is a through bolt that holds the sheave. Is that correct?

If you need to replace mast sheaves, consider Harken 'self contained' ball bearing sheaves: http://www.harken.com/productcategory.aspx?taxid=393

StaSet-X .... terrible; it twists and is subject to 'hockles'.
