I found my masthead cap cracked 80% thru on one side for the forestay toggle & pin. I will be de-stepping my mast next weekend. Not quite sure if the new masthead casting needs is welded to the spar. Can anyone give me some feedback on this? captn ron

Most cast mastheads are not welded to the spar. IIRC the C30 mast truck is about $200 from Catalina Direct. 4 1/4-20 screws should hold it just fine.

Been there and done it!

Our mast head also broke for the forestay. In fact it broke right off. I checked with Catalina and the first item listed for the rigging system was a masthead replacement which I ordered and finally recieved it 2 months later. In the meantime I took the broken masthead to a welder who did a great job and make it stronger and we been using the fixed one ever since (2years). The new masthead doesn't have a predrilled hole to secure it to the mast so you have to drill a new hole.

thanks

Jobee, Thanks for the info. I had a hell of a time with some little (shit) clerk at Catalina. I wrote a letter to them and received a call from no other than Frank Butler himself. We talked for about 45 minutes. ya know how sailors are. Well i got my masthead in 3 days. I installed a dual steaming / deck 3 years ago and because I only had a 2 conductor wire, I needed to use the mast as a common to get both lights to work. I think this caused electrolysis to the masthead. There were other "weakened" areas with the look of electyolysis, so I didn't want to weld it. I will be pulling it out next week. Replacing all wiring, shrouds and any uglies I find. Oh lucky me. Where's your hailing port/ capt eddie
