I have the same problem as Roger does below. My hayards are outside the mast and I have no access plate at the base of the mast. Does it sound like a good idea to make a bigger hole and make a close out plate to get to the plug and fix this problem? I'm talking maybe a 2 inch hole. I have a 81 c30.

wiring access hole

Greg, In my perevious boat, a C30, I put a 4" hole with a cover plate in the side of the mast at the base to access the wiring connections. It worked out perfectly. It was a great help also when stepping the mast. I could set the mast in place and then make the wiring connections later at my convenience. Good luck. Don Hall C36, Windsong III

Wire outside mast

You'll need to unstep your mast if you want to do this. I drilled small holes 3" up the base of the mast, put in grommets and ran the wires (spreaders, anchor, steaming, and VHF antenna) out the mast. On deck I dilled a 1" hole and epoxied in a PVC fitting which I formed an upside-down "J" with PVC fittings. The only way water is going to get in is if the boat is submerged - but if it were, the hole is in the head. All wiring is accessible and can be replaced or serviced with unstepping the mast in the futur
