mast wiring

The mast of my 81 C22 has never had wiring run through it and I am thinking about doing this before putting her in this spring. I have read the Catalina Direct instructions on how to do this and they talk about drilling a hole in the small "dimple" to the starboard side of the mast and then reaching in to retrieve the factory installed wiring that I guess is in there. Has anyone every done this? I hate drilling holes in my top deck if I don't need to. Everything else seems straight forward, but would like someone to hold my hand for the first minute of the project! Thanks for the help, Steve

I never found the wires

Steve: I tried to do what you are about to do about 7 years ago, and never found the wires under the dimple in the cavity between the underside of the deck and the liner. I tried for hours. I hope you get many replies to your question saying that it was no problem, but I never found them. It wasn't any problem sealing the hole back up, and it isn't noticable where I did this. What I ended up doing was drilling a hole straight through, and using a sealed deck fitting. West Marine sells them. Actually I used 2, because the VHF wire also goes through on the other side of the mast the same way. On the inside of the boat, they come out right in front of the turned post. I used little white clamps that keep the white jacketed wires right near the track just forward of the curtain. It looks OK inside and out of the boat. I recommend that you look back through the archives about how to run the wires inside the mast. I described how I kept the wires from slapping the inside of the mast using spacers made from milk jugs or soda bottles on a previous response. Someone else suggested just using plenty of wire ties, every foot or so. That sounds good to me too, as long as you use plenty of them. I would never do what Catalina Direct suggests, because of the weight. I know some people say it's not much weight, but all I know is it's a long distance up the mast, and even a pound located that far up, that doesn't serve a purpose in making the boat sail better, is something I would never consider doing to my boat.
