I own an 83 Cat 30TR. Does anyone know the weight of the mast as I would like to bring it to my home (2miles) over the winter to work on. I am concerned about the weight on the roof of my Jeep Cherokee(the owner's manual in the car lists 150lb max on the roof) and of course the overhang. I was thinking of plywood with padding and to distribute the weight. I know of one other who actually did it and his car doesn't have a crease in it.

mast length

Your mast is about 40 feet long. That's as long as a 90 passenger school bus! Even if you could get around the traffic legalities of this short trip, the mast would have to be supported at several points along its length. I don't think carrying it on top of a car is really a viable option, no matter what the weight.

I have a C-30 standard rig (2' shorter mast than yours). I had the yard unstep it 2 years ago for inspection. There is no way to securely mount a mast of that length on a passenger vehicle. Maybe the boom, but not the mast. Hire a guy with a truck or leave it in the yard. --Allen

The risk of damage to the mast and your vehicle

does not warrant this kind of foolhardiness. And I'm sure the mast weighs a great deal more than 150 pounds. We have our mast unstepped for storage each year. It takes 3 men to move it and a gin pole to take it down. Get a professional to move it for you.

Your all right

I thought I could save some money, but I agree with all of you. I will do as I have always done and have the yard unstep it and I will do the work there. Thank you all.

I take mine home every year

My house is 2 miles from my boat and the yard puts the C30 TR mast on my truck rack (ford F350 )and I drive home slow and Ive done this 3 years out of 5. I put It on the truck by my self but Im 6'1 and around 285LB and move ladders and poles around all day long at work . I think its around 350 lb and would crush the roof of ajeep on the first bump. but two large men and afull size pick up with racks and It wount be a problem .

If you email Catalina, they will tell you the exact length and weight of your mast. As a comparison, the mast on my C320 is 42' and 153 pounds. The weight is with nothing on the mast...no lines, shrouds, stays, antennas, etc.
