Hello, I have an 1986 O'DAY 31 that is new to me. This is the first mast that is not stepped on the cabin sole. One of the wedges has fallin out (there are only 4). All the shroads seem to be at a reasonable tension, and I see no other indicators of a problem. I would rather not try to put the wedge back through toe topside, but??? That is my question - can I hammer the wedge back-up, or do I have to open up the topside to get the wedge back where it belongs? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. The mast wedge should most definitely be replaced. The function of the wedges on a thru-stepped mast is to locate the bearing contact between the mast and the collar through the deck (known as the "partners") and serves an important function with respect to location and support of the mast. In general, the wedges are inserted from the top, not the bottom, or they will fall out again as the mast deflects on a hard tack. Talk to your rigger, but don't ignore the missing wedge.
