Jasper

Family, I just became a member of the 28.5 family and am already a different person (HAPPY !!!). I bought mine from the University in Rhode Island and want to take it all the way up to Lake Champlain. Of course by water, we stay sailors you know. The next thing comes up. It's out of the water now, with the mast down. It will be in the water soon, so the mast needs to be placed. I'll sail it to NYC where the mast needs to go down (sorry, no grew needed)and finally at the final destination: the mast needs to....you get it. What can I do to do this with my grew ? Happy sailings !!! Jasper from "Flyer"

Take mast down near Albany

Lake Champlain sailors doing the hudson run can probably tell you where, but you can take the mast down fairly close to albany. If I recall, there are 2 good places. That way, you'll enjoy the trip up the Hudson without the stick in the way. Once on Lake champlain, you can probably re-step in Shelburne, VT. Had a 28.5 for 7 years and loved it a lot. Good Luck and welcome to the Hunter family.

Mast Stepping

Jasper, if your request is how do you step the mast with your crew, you don't. As Claude said, stop at a marina to have it done. I have it done each season and it runs about $400 down and up. Tom, 87' 28.5

Crew of 3 will do it

In fact, my wife and I took down our h27 mast last fall in a stiff wind with no mishaps. Suggest that you get some help from someone with experience the first time. Of course, you need a crane, but most marinas around us have one. The job took the two of us around two hours. I helped another fellow put up his mast on a 30 footer to learn how.

Careful with the mast

The mast on my Hunter 28 is pretty big, and heavy. I can't imagine trying to step or unstep it without a crane or gin pole. Also someone who's experienced at operating it. One little slip up and your sailing season could come to a quick end. Especially if your using a furler on the forestay. I would recommend having a boatyard take responsibilty for the mast.
