We're looking to purchase a Catalina 22 and found the base of the mast decking to have numerous "spiders" and the turnbuckle apparently pushed off center. Is this evidence of serious damage? Or are the "spiders" cosmetic and turnbuckle easily re-aligned and stabilized?

I would check very carefully

I am repairing a simlar problem that a PO repaired poorly. The wood was rotten due to water getting in. Tap on it very carefully, and compair the sound to other places. It is not that hard of a job, just one you do not want to do if you don't have to.

Shroud locations

My '84 C-22 was delivered direct from the factory with lifelines installed as well. The forward and aft lowers on both sides were installed in different locations fore and aft as well as inboard and outboard locations. The lifeline stantions also were not set with any type of symetry. I actually only had to move the forward lower 2-3 inches to make a difference, but it did. You may not have a problem, but just a poor installation. p.s. I wouldn't trade my C-22 for anything.
