I have a 1977 Mac V25. When I got it it had no mast support. I put one together out of PVC pipe and composite decking. I usually tie it to the boat and to the mast but it is a pain in the a.... On the bottom I made a bracket the locks into the drain so tha that it doesn't move.

Before I go back to the drawing board I figured that I would consult the post. Does anyone have a fool proof mast suport system for trailering?

I made this one because I drive 70 miles on roads that make you say"ahahahah".

It removes in about 2 min with the help of a cordless drill.

I also use a center support.

If you are talking about a support at the stern our Mac had simple....

...one when we bought it that I assume was the factory one.

The support board slid into the two brackets (lower arrow above) that have thumb screws in them. Slide the board down into them and tighten the thumb screws. I now use the brackets to hold a temporary support that helps support the middle of the solar array down when going down the highway. The support is removed at the water.

It is also a good idea to support the mast near....

.... the middle also and a lot of Mac owners have made different supports for there. Here is....

...the one I made and the mod....

I apologize for the off topic thread crashing but,
Time Bandit,
I noticed your mast light. I bought one sorta like that at WM and when I got it home I found out it didn't have a lens on the deck light so I took it back.
How do you like yours, and who sells it?
Thanks,
Jim

Easy Peasy. Talked to Bluewater Marine in Seattle on another issue this a.m. They can possibly get you a stock carrier. Call 800-688-8626, #3. Quated price around $75. Worth it. Sorry can't send pics but if you want to build your own. I have a '76. The stock Mac mast support is made of 1" heavy square tubing 6' long. Two horizontal pieces 1"w x 2"L are welded onto the stock with bolts welded to these. For support weld triangle supports top and bottom They are spaced to fit onto the rudder gudgeons, (where the rudder attaches to the hull) The top of the carrier is fitted two ways. Stock is a piece of 1" flatbar welded to the top and shaped like a "V" and cover V "ears" with plastic tubing. I revised mine and put a roller there so that I could easily walk the mast back for hoisting. When trailering just tie down to stern cleats and lay mast groove on fore chainplate and tie down. Tie down center mast at step to keep from bouncing. See Mr. Bill post following this one. I have one piece rudder and don't trailer with it attached. Hope this helps. I could send you a drawing by snailmail or fax. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

my boats PO had one welded up and attached to the pindles.

but it should have been bent a little more, as its not square to the stern.... but its plenty strong.

(I moved the stock brackets to the rear, incase I need to drop the mast after I leave the trailer. )

it would work on a 25 but not on a 26S (no pintles)

I helped a guy last month with his new boat and it had a wooden support that was cleverly made. It rested on the transom with a 2x4 that was notched on the ends and locked into the stanchion base. The upright rested against the stern rail with a short bungee. At the top of the upright he sandwiched it with two more short board that served as a yoke and housed a roller. It was pretty solid and extremely simple to make. I will take detailed pictures of it today when I go to the marina.
Mine was the stock 1x1 square tubing that hung on the gudgeons. I modified the top to accept a roller. It does the job but is not as ridged as the wooden home made one. I used it for traveling but I never felt comfortable about that much weight on the gudgeons especially over bumpy roads.

Here are picts of the 1x1.

I have this but I only use it to raise the mast, I dont want to bend the rudder mounts.

The lower brace is required to keep it from twisting.

Mine is about 20 years old and still working fine, haven't even replaced a bulb.

Got it at west marine, it is made by Hella marine and they still show it in their catalog but I can not tell if there is a cover but it looks like it.

One of their 3562 serries towards the bottom of the page.
