Compression post replacement

The support pole under the mast is called the compression post. The best solution is to take a very good measurement, maybe add 1/4- 1/2" to account for sagging, and have an aluminium one made for it. About 2-1/2" square ought to do it. Otherwise, you will go with wood. The best thing is Sitka spruce (what wooden masts are made of) because it is absolutely rock-solid under compression (being crushed end to end). The next best thing is white spruce or fir, which is probably what MacGregor used (because it's cheap). Improve on the original by giving it a good coating with about two coats of WEST-system epoxy and then UVR-inhibiting paint or varnish before installing it. As long as the ends are secured it can be screwed to the bulkhead-- if it's in the right place, once it's under compression with the rig tuned properly it's not going anywhere. Hope this helps.
