mast storage and the Erie Canal

My husband and I are considering doing the great loop, but we wonder what sailors are doing about the overhang of their masts (once down on the deck). We would have about 10 feet overhang on both ends of the boat. It doesn't seem like we could maneuver through the canal system or stay at a marina with that kind of situation. What have others done?

Erie Canal Experience

We made the trip down the Erie Canal in 2005. We had an overhang of about 18 feet overall. We centered the mast on the deck and had NO problems at all in the Canal. There is plenty of room in the locks and docking at night was no problem either. Most of the locks and many towns along the canal have sea walls to tie up to. There are a few marinas along the way but we didn't use them. The town facilities an locks were free! If you come past Buffalo I highly suggest you consider RCR to unstep your mast. Darren and his crew do a great job packing the mast for the trip an putting it on your boat. On the other end of the canal Riverview Marine Services in Catskill, NY did a good job stepping our mast.
