I am looking for a way to ascend/descend our mast with mininal additional assistance. Have investigated "Mast Mate" (webbed steps that are raised via slot in mast and a halyard) and also "Topclimber" a device wherein one uses leg-power to ascend/descend. Does anyone have any experience with these, or other, devices? Thanks!

Track that fits in the mast slot

In the back of SAIL magazine, in the classified section, there is a product that slides into the mast slot. I think it's called 'mast climb' or something to that effect. Roc

Check out the web site www.prime-climb.com. or write to them at primeclimb@aol.com. They custom make mast steps to go in the slot for the main. Cost will run about $350. Bob

a couple of ideas

I have a pully system that I hoist up a halyard then pull myself up the mast. I have a 3:1 system, but should have a 4:1 system. I like hoisting myself up instead of relying on someone else to do it for me. Another person in my marina went to a mountain climbing store and bought those assenders that you can just walk up a halyard on and is quite pleased with them. They are way cheaper than the "marine" variety! He also uses a climbing harness as a backup and to hang from the top of the mast. I installed a set of steps at the top of my mast so I can stand and be above the height of the mast. There is no need to spend tons of money for an already invented idea when you can go simple and save at least 1/2 of the cost.

What he said (Richard)

I have been using ascenders for some time. I love them, they are much easier than giving the misses another shot at collecting on your insurance and hauling you up. The use of the harness, and I would sugest a second line is a good safety idea. The "stop" after the lifting line parted or the rig failed would not be fun. There are two kinds of ascenders, one has "teeth" and Gibs has a "friendlier" cam that does the same thing with less stress to the rope/line. Gibs ascenders run about 60-80 bucks each. A climbing store can also show you how to use them. The seat will be about 120. Alot less than the marine hardware needed to get to the top. There is a way with "prussik" line. but you would have to email me for that.
