I'm new at this larger boat thing since I just got my Catalina 22 (#880 - 1971). I've been practicing setting it up in my backyard and doing other work on it. I built a gin pole from a 2x4 and a few other simple hardware things, and use my sheet pulley to raise it up. The problem I'm having is that once I get it off the back cradle, it will swing over to one side - causing some fear of bending/breaking something important. My gin pole will sometimes flop over to one side, and the mast will follow it in that direction. Yikes! The mast step has seen this problem before with past owners (See photo) and I thought I would bend it back, but figured I'd leave it alone since it works, and I'll just bend it again putting the mast up. I've been thinking maybe the A-frame type of gin pole may be the better idea for me since it looks like it will keep the mast centered better. Is this the case? I think I'm making this a lot harder than I have to, and I see all these web sites showing how easy this should be do do that even a small kid is shown cranking up a mast on a C22. Advice? Ideas? Plans on building and A-frame? Help! Tom Newbie Catalina owner of the yet unnamed #880! Renton, WA

A-frame step?

The more I look at them, the more I like the simple A-frame approach. I've seen a few sites that show these and should be simple to put together. It's just that darn swing after getting the keel off the back support that scares me!
