A boatyard cut right through the mast step to remove the mast on a 1979 ERICSON 29. How can this be fixed?

yes is figured on that

There is an Ericson 29 for sale on ebay and is located in Rancho Cordova, California. I went over and looked at it today. It is in overall good shape but has a motor that needs replacing or rebuilding. I will pass on it. It struck me as unusual to have the mast removed this way. Is this common practice? I for one would think not. What would it cost to get this fixed?

Masts are meant to be lifted in and out of boats

there is no reason to saw them off unless you are sending the hull to the wreckers.

wreckers

That is exactly where this boat is at now. Rancho Marine Recycling. Its to bad because this boat is in to good of shape to end up there.

Re-join mast

The yard probably thinking of wracking the boat so no point in unstepping the mast which need a crane and knowledgible crews to do the job properly. You can re-join the mast or get a new (or used) one if the boat itself is in good shape and you get the boat for next to nothing. Actually I have seen the mast on some of the bigger Hunter (>33 feet) has two parts jointed by an insert and rows of rivets about 6 feets above deck. I suppose mast manufacturer can't make them that long in one piece.
