Oct. 16, 2006 Hi, ***** 1992 Catalina Capri ***** In strong winds last week, I accidently jibed then I noticed that the mast step has shifted about a quarter of an inch away from the centerline of the boat. It then shifted back to its original position. Can anyone tell me how the mast step is attached to the cabin top? Would the two bolts that I see actually be lag bolts? Also, from inside the cabin, I noticed two phillips screws on the cabin roof right below the mast step. Does anypne know their purpose? I guess that my questions are actually about how to tighten up the mast step once I un-step the mast. Would appreciate any assistance or advice. Thanks! - Richard Scorce

Mast plate shifting

I replaced my original mast tabernacle with a home made mast plate hinge & a hinge on the mast. The plate hinge is held in place by two lag bolts. I assume the lag bolts are the original method. The bolt holes were nearly stripped so I filled them with toothpicks & epoxy & then screwed the plate down when the epoxy was still uncured. Silicone under the plate. No philllps head screws on mine. Regards from Canada.

Danger

I would not raise a sail on that rigging until it's repaired, You're taking a chance, it may bring it down the next time.

Mast step

The mast step on my capri 22 is held down by 2 bolts. The phillips screws you see from the bottom are the nuts. If you get a box wrench and a buddy you may be able to tighten them with mast up. I re siliconed my front bolt after I took off the spinniker track. (It was leaking) Tighting them may disturb silicon and they may start to leak, don't want to crush boat by making them to tight. I noticed my mast step moves about 1/8 of an inch in heavy air.

Shifting Mast Step - Thanks

Thanbks for your feedback. I intend to tighten the bolts just as soon as I unstep the mast. Appreciate your advice about over tightening. -Richard
