Anyone currently running the so called "improved" mast step in conjunction with the Halyard plate? Hate it ? Love it? Any challenges when you went to bed the two components?

I pulled my step yesterday --filling the holes as usual but was thinking this would give me good options for both the vang and losing some holes in the deck related to halyard leads.

And forgot to mention: Pictures! if you happen to have some :)

Mine is exactly that way, just not as clean... I found a crack in the compression post underneath, and will be pulling and replacing the post, and rebedding the step. It is the only set up I am familiar with, but it seems to make sense. I noticed the lag bolts holding the pieces were galvanized, rather than stainless. I guess a PO had sort of improved the design...

I have the new mast step and halyard plate. the only issue I have, which I just noticed the other night, is that the hinge bolt slots on the mast step are cut in the rear 1/3rd, but the hinge bolt hole in my mast is actually dead center. This will effectively move my mast back about 3/4 inch (roughly). The problem with that is the aft side of the mast will sit on top of the angled vang attachment. I believe this can be solved by cutting the 45 degree corner off the aft face like I see on other mast sections. Otherwise I will have to cut the bottom inch off my mast so I can re-drill the hinge bolt holes to align with the new mast step, and then use the spacer kit.

Excellent point-- and of course I don't have a detailed (enough) pic of the mast base.... fairly certain I have the hole in the rear 1/3rd but will triple check--

Now I feel silly... last night it was dark when I test fit my mast step to my mast which is laying on sawhorses in the back yard. I didn't fit right because my bolt hole is drilled dead center... Well, that is certainly correct... for the TOP of the mast where the masthead and shroud tangs bolt on, LOL.
So after work, in the light of day, I could see my folly and actually placed the mast step at the base of the mast where my hinge-bolt hole is in fact drilled at the aft 1/3rd mark... Fits perfectly.
On that note, here is some pics. BTW, I will still probably cut the bottom inch off of my mast and use a space. Looking at the base it is obvious without even using a framing square that the bottom is not cut at 90 degrees... There is some corrosion damage and the holes are little bit messed up and too close to the bottom. I think I will make the cut square and re-drill the holes just maybe 1/8" to 3/16" higher than they are. And just because I can't do anything without over engineering the piss out of it, i won't be using the CD spacer kit.... I have a special plan. (insert diabolical Bond Villain laugh)

I have that set-up. Halyard plate is nice - so many handy attachment points. It does interfere a bit with my mast bolt - a bit difficult getting in and out due to the curved sides of the halyard plate. I store my boat mast-up, so it's rarely a problem for me. If I were stepping / Unstepping the mast after each outing, the inconvenience might just about offset the convenience of the mast plate.

Thanks All-- great insight as usual. @CloudDiver : funny :) Here I was thinking that was a "new style" feature-- I wouldn't know the difference. Good point @Barnacle_Bob, I'll be stepping the mast at every sail -- I'll have to plan accordingly.

The long slot for the hinge bolt allows you to pick up the mast base so the bolt head clears the top of the halyard plate and slide it out....

You would think so! I need to drop my mast this weekend to fix my windex, the re-step and tune the rigging - our racing season is just getting started here in Arizona now that it's getting cooler. I'll see how it goes; but, my memory is that there is an issue there.

BTW CloudDiver, I was in your neck of the woods over Labor Day weekend. As part of our San Diego get-away, we had a nice afternoon on Mission Bay on a rented (Seaforth) Capri 22. Planning to keep our boat in the San Diego area - probably San Diego Bay - next summer. You've got lots of nice sailing out there!
