Mast Step Question

I am a new member of this group and I'm currently researching Albin Vegas.

I would need a boat the is trailerable, and it appears as if some Vegas have a hinged tabernacle (hinged mast step), while other Vegas have an inset mast step.

In talking with one broker, it was presented that a crane would be needed to unstep the mast. I have seen photos of Vegas with a hinged mast step and the A-frame raising/lowering system, so I know that the hinged mast step is at least an option.

Is the hinged mast step an after market item. Does one convert a boat from a inset mast step to a hinged mast step and is this difficult or prohibitively expensive.

Thanks for any insights. The collective wisdom of this group is very much appreciated.

A Tabernacle mast is after market. Check out my Vega for sale on the American Vega website. Full description and photos.

Hi

Most of the Dutch Vegas have a tabernacle system to allow going under bridges etc. This is an "add-on" and can be purchased (Round about £500)

The new hinged mast base on Tern (there's a photo of it in the photo section)was purchased from Ballanger Spars Custom aluminum and carbon masts and booms for about $250 if I remember correctly. He had my mast in the shop and did the fitting but it didn't look like it was difficult. I haven't dropped the mast with it yet.

That is a bad term to use. One doesn't want to "DROP" a mast - they bend and
dent easily :) I know, I used to work in a rigging shop!

Thanks very much for the information regarding the hinged mast step. It sounds as if a retro fit is relatively easy.

The tabernacle mast step on Lealea is a very simple affair. Maybe
you can tell in the photos in this article from the VORM.

It is basically nothing more than a heavy stainless steel hinge with
a flange to locate the mast and a three inch hole for wires The
pivot is a half inch ss bolt. The base through bolts with four 3/8
flat head machine screws and the mast is secured to the flange with
six #10 machine screws. I would think it simple for any machine shop
to fabricate.

Departure now set for July 24th. Still need to install the new fuel
tank and get the engine hooked up and running.

Does anyone have a drawing for one of these? I've got a while before I'll need it (hopefully it will stay warm for awhile).

Thanks,
Jack
