Oday 22 Lake Pettenwell
We recently purchased a 1973 Oday 22 with a replacement mast, bronze color, bendy. It rests in a mast step, slotted horizontally, with the three sided walls positioned with open end facing aft. Well, the mast bottom does not fully contact the step bottom plate due to a casting hump within the mast bottom. The hump is part of the forged casting and doesn't seem to be the original mast step. (The aluminum cast mast step is secured to the cabin deck with three 1/4" screws.) Can anyone provide a photo of their mast step for the Oday 22 and send it to us? At this point, we are ready to remove the cast step, grind down the hump which would enable the bottom of the mast to rest squarely on the flat plate. Also, the slots only are horizontal, so we think having a vertical slot would also hold any fore-aft movement of the mast's bottom. I guess the devil is truly in the details. Thanks for your time. Joel and Norma

That's what mine looks like. The hump on the mast step prevents the (original) mast from moving aft.

Heartfelt thanks!

Picture below of original O'DAY 22 mast-step for 1973 models (used until at least 1976). Original color of the anodizing on the spars for 1973-6 O'DAYs was a gold color, hence the "Gold Medal Fleet".
Dear Sunbird,
Many many thanks for the photo. A picture is truly worth a thousand words because you've saved Norma and me great headaches and expense.
Fair winds,
Joel and Norma
