Mast step cleat installation.

I sail a 79 Hunter 30. I've been toying with the idea of installing mast steps, possibly the ronstan skeletonized cleats. I'm long legged so I could probably go 30" between steps with no problem. They take 3- 3/16" screws or rivets each to mount. Do I need to be overly concerned about drilling holes in the mast for these, or are the mast overdesigned in strength to start with.

I personally see no problem. Think of it this way

The mast of a boat is similar to the stem of a plant. In fact, the mast of a sailboat is designed with "tube" intergrety in mind. The hollow structure of the mast provides terrific strength.

About the only concern with 'hole making' is

to not make more than one on the same level of the mast. Rigs that have exit blocks invariably have the holes staggered. Mast steps do that naturally. All except the top, of course, but the holes are so small and filled with screws. Are you sure you want steps on a Hunter mast? I don't care for the looks. :(
