Hi. First off, the info here helped me make the decision to buy a H170. The person that said it is like a large laser was not kidding. Holy quick turning, Batman! Now back to our regularly scheduled question – I have both stays set at position 4, and now my mast step bracket has started to part. Each side is about 15-20 degrees from vertical, going in opposite directions. Is this normal? I don’t think it looks normal. Is it possible that the dealer put the pin through the mast too low, and this is causing the problem? It looks like it was designed to have the mast rest on the bottom of the bracket, not having the sides of the step do anything more then help guide the mast to the correct position. If the above is correct, and the pin in placed too low in the mast, will this be a warranty item? I purchased the boat new in May of 02, but did not get her out until July 20 for the first time. Thanks for your opinion…. John

I do not understand

Is the base of the mast sitting on top of the mast step? There is a pin going through the mast from side to side which is designed to guide the mast into the mast step. Crazy Dave Condon

No sitting on top

The pin is in the slot; just the pin hits the lowest part of the slot before the bottom of the mast makes contact with the bottom of the bracket. In other words, step the mast normally. Where another boat’s mast bottom would rest on the bottom of the bracket, mine does not. When the rig is tensioned, to allow the bottom of the mast to sit on the bottom bracket, the sides, where the pin goes, is forced out by the pin resting on the bottom of the slot. As an extreme case, if one were to look from the stern towards to mast step, a normal mast step would have vertical sides. Mine looks like an inverted cone.

you got a problem

The base of the mast is designed to rest on the mast step. Now I understand the problem and it needs to be fixed. I am going to assume that the guide pin is simply put too low in the bottom of the mast or it is a defective mast step. You will need to contact your dealer about this as that should not be the case as this is a new boat. It is unsafe. If you need any further explanation, let me know. Contact Jim Novak, 860-739-3033 who is the samall Hunter rep and advise as he will take care of this. Take a measurment of the length of the pin, distance of the pin (from Middle of pin) to the bottom of the mast. Jim has been made aware of your situation.
