I picked up a 22ft. catalina this summer. It had all new shrouds. The mast looked like it was raked aft to much. I adjusted the shrouds to bring it forward more. When I'am close-hauled and trim the sails,it seems like it's pushing the bow down some. When I got back to the marina and was walking back to my car,I looked at another 22ft. catalina and the mast was raked forward a lot more than mine. Can anyone tell me the correct rake for my mast.My last boat was a fractional rig sailboat. This has a lot larger jib,so maybe thats why it seems to push the bow down more than my last boat. 2 inches seems to work well.

Jim, I have been running with 2 inches of mast rake and 2 inches of mast bend. This has worked very well on my 80 C22. I use hanked on sails and run with the forestay having about 3 inches of deflection. I use my adjustable backstay to straighten the forestay up and add additional mast bend in big blows. Hope this helps, Ray

Ray, is that 2" aft or forward. Are you using a halyard as a plumbob so that you can tell when you think the rake is right? I'am going to pull the boat from the lake tues.so I'll adjust the rake of the mast and try it out before loading it up. Thanks for your help JIM

Mast rake on C-22's

The catch with the Catalina 22 rigging is that it slightly varies from one model to the next. The original boats have an oval mast with spreaders that stick straight out and eye bolts for the upper shrouds that are almost forward of the mast. Later boats have a flat sided mast with spreaders that angel back and upper shroud eye bolts that are aft of the mast. Still later boats have a mast that is about three inches shorter than those of earlier boats. Add to this the normal production variances encountered in more than 15,000 boats. Then we add in the effects of a backstay adjuster and the particular sails used. So the essence is that there really is no universal rigging set up that one can use with every C-22. Each skipper must sail his boat to figure out mast rake to achieve the desired weather and/or lee helm. While we can apply general rules, it is usually most helpful when asking questions about rigging for a C-22 to include the hull number, the type of mast and its length, the sails used, the existence of a boom vang, and weather there is a backstay adjuster and the forestay tension range used with that backstay adjuster.

Jim, Mast rake is measured aft.

Jim, My C22 is a 1980 with the flat sided mast. 2 inches aft rake won't hurt any of the different masts. 1 inch if your really concerned about your model. Split backstays also shouldn't make any difference as that is a control that is used seperatly from the rake and mainly in bigger winds to bend the mast additionally and flatten the main to de-power it. It is a good idea to learn how to adjust all your rigging as the shroud tensions play such a big part in how the boat handles and sails. Good luck, Ray
