In case nobody answers with anything specific, here is the text from the Cherubini Hunter Owner's Manual's section on rig tuning that addresses mast rake. Simply the process "experiement". Sail size, sail condition, wind strength and whether reefed or not all play a role in weather helm. So the most desirable rake for your boat may not be the same as for somebody else with the same boat with (say) a different sail plan. Here's the text:
"If your boat exhibits either lee helm or excessive weather helm, additional adjustments are necessary. A slight degree of weather helm (the tendency for the boat to round up into the wind when steering is released) is desirable. If weather helm is excessive, it can usually be corrected by raking the mast forward until proper balance is reached. If this does not quite achieve the balance you want, try storing additional weight aft (under the cockpit seat)."
Also attached is a pdf on mast tuning for the type of rig we have. For me its the most straight forward on both process and explanation that I have encountered.
Actually I also am in the process of trying out a different rake angle on my 1980 Hunter Cherubini 36. Because San Francisco Bay is so windy, when I first got my boat six years ago, I adjusted the mast with no rake since I read it could help minimize weather helm. Now I have given the mast a slight rake aft, but haven't yet sailed. Just want to see if pointing will improve a bit, and if additional weather helm is really that noticeable.
One more thought ... post your question on "Sail Trim" Or do a generic search on mast rake rather than one specific to your 33.
