does anyone have any really easy, simple way for a man & his wife to step the mast? Last time we did it took 3 men and 2 women (watching out). Is it possible to use to the trailer's winch to help?

sail magazine

Check the past two years of sail magazine. One of them had a detiled article on raising and lowering the mast of a trailerable boat. In summary you run the lines from the mast to the bow through some pulleys and back to your winch.

Mast Up

Try the following web site, www.spiritone.com/~mack/c22/techtips. You'll find several ways there. You can also purchase a Mast Up from Catalina Direct. It positions the mast at a higher angle so you can get more leverage on it on it's initial raise. Two people can do it quite easily.

Mast Up works

We bought the Mast Up last year (around $150) from Catalina Direct and its worth every cent. Not only does it make raising/dropping the mast a lot easier it also serves as a support crutch for the end of the mast when trailering.

And if all else fails ! :)

You can also call Catalina and get a quote for their new mast raising assembly which I purchased with my new Cat 22. It is so simple and easy, my wife raises the mast now with one hand while I gather the shrouds and attach the turnbuckles, and the forestay

Try an A-Frame

Mainbrace, the C-22 association magazine has in the past had articles showing how to use a simple A-frame to help in raising and lowering your mast. I made mine out of a couple of lodgepole pine, joined together with a bolt that holds a couple of sturdy clips that can then attach to the forestay and to a line that can be controlled by hand from near the bow (or to the trailer winch cable if you are using one). The bases of the A-frame attach where the front shrouds attach (by small lines)and I set them on a couple of padded chunks of plywood. The frame is about 8 or 9 ft. tall I think. Also I use a brace that fits into the two gudgeons after removal of the rudder. It has 2 positions, one about 6 ft above the rail on the transom and the other even with the cabin. The higher helps set the angle for raising, the lower is for storage or travel. This was made with from a 2 x 4, and a little plywood for the yokes. This came with my old boat; not sure where they got the pintels but they are similar to those on the rudder. My wife and I can now raise and lower the mast fairly easily.

I am going to design a hoist for one person to raise mast. I just bought a catalina 22 a 1973 model. My wife won't enjoy raising the mast. I plan to use the trailer winch and an Aframe to hoist mast. If it works out to be easy to step mast up and down I will send you plans. I will need your mailing address. Bob
