Mast Raising Gin Pole

Hi,

I have a 1993 Hunter H 19-2 and am missing the mast raising "gin" pole, I have the shorter shrouds for it but I never got the pole itself when I bought the boat. I have been looking for quite some time to find one but have not had any luck, so I figured I could make one up if I knew the dimensions: Pole length, tube diameter & thickness, along with a drawing of the fittings on the top.

An instruction sheet would also be quite helpful too!

Thanks.

I attached a photo of what I am looking for.

Gin pole designs vary widely based on the owners preference and investment and intent of use. I prefer a self contained pole system that I can use while on the water if needed.

Our 1st gin pole was merely a 6 foot long 2x6 board with a notch cut at one end (to fit mast) and a u-bolt and a pulley at the other end. I bolted a trailer winch I had laying around to it and walla! Wasn't pretty or sophisticated but it did the trick just fine.

I've since built several other variations looking to reduce weight and rig.
Current one is a light weight 6 ft galvanized steel fence pole with the same pulleys ubolt and winch and a steel yoke I put on the end for the mast end (fits on the mast bolt).

Some day when I'm flush with cash I'll make one from light weight telescoping aluminum tube and get a brake winch. Most of the loads are borne by the attachment of the halyard and the attachment to the deck cleat - the pole is really there to just support it all - doesn't have to be super over built.

Try searching these forums and I'm sure you will find many designs and opinions - choose your poison.

Do you really need a gin pole on a 19 ft boat??

I don't have a 19 so can't help with specific dimensions. However, what you want is a pole that when the mast is vertical will extend forward to near but not quite as far as the forestay. You will be using some sort of block and tackle to pull the pole (attached to mast via halyard) down until the mast is vertical. Then while held in that position you attach the forestay to its chainplate, in front of the fore end of the gin pole and the line from the mast down to the gin pole upper eye or other such fitting.

Gin Pole Info Plus More is Available

Somewhere on the site here are electronic files of the original manual and additional files that have a drawing with the specs for the pole. Lots of other useful stuff too.

Look around you'll find all sorts of good stuff

I'm using two 3/4" sticks of EMT in an A frame configuration for mine. That style solves the issue of side stays for the gin pole however a more ridged attachment to the mast has resolved that for others when using a single pole. Go with ten feet although others have gone shorter you can always trim some off if you want to increase the effort the first 30 degrees or store the rig on board as Topcat suggests.

Bobbyfngers2;

You will see a hole at the forward base of the mast with an additional piece of mast aluminum pop riveted on. This is where the pole would be inserted. Generally, it took a one inch rounded stainless steel pole in later years but I think the hole is bigger than that and if so, it would be for a larger aluminum pole.

First, see if this site store can make you one. If not, it will be simple to make with some guidance. First you can see a pictue of it in the owners manual under boat information but it does not say the size tube/metal or length. If this site does not make them, we will need to inquire with others the length and size of that pole and then I can instruct you from there how to make one.

As Crazy Dave states, you can get the pole diameter from the hole at the base of the mast. The original gin pole had a cut out on the very end to fit the wire chase on the inside of the mast.

To get the length, measure from the mast step to the u-bolt. With the mast fully up, the end of the pole is directly above the u-bolt. On the H260 that's about 12 feet.

A 12 foot gin pole for a 19 foot boat?????? It is 19 isn't it?

A 5 foot gin pole works fine on our 25 foot boat 28 foot mast.

Anyone out there who has a water ballast 19, would you please measure the length and diameter of the mast raise pole and post those demensions here please.

I did not suggest a 12 pole for the H19. I suggested mesauring the distance between the mast step and the u-bolt.

First go back and review the owners manual on line under boat information for the 19 (1993-1996). If it does not show the specific length, the best was to measure is from the back of the mast to a point vertical attachment of the mainsheet from the boweye in the anchor locker and add about 3 inches. The back of the pole needs to be curved to fit over the sail slide channel. At the other end you want to drill a hole for a wire to go thru with two looped ends secured twice on each side. It will depend on the size hole of the mast that the diameter of the gin pole should be which is probably the larger aluminum pole of that period used by Hunter. Why don't you contact Eddie at Hunter to see if they still have the exact measurements.
