Mast Raising 26

We seem to be having a challenge successfully raising the mast on our 95 Hunter 26. Yesterday we managed to break the mast step. I have hopefully ordered the correct replacement part, and we are going to try again this weekend. In searching the archives, everyone seems to make this out to be an easy task, so I'm not sure what we are doing wrong. Is there some way to stabilize it from side to side as it is raised? Yesterday, we got it about 1/4 the way up and if fell sideways breaking the mast step. Fortunately the mast was not damaged, but it sure was disappointing heading home with the boat still on the trailer :-( I'd appreciate any pointers, help, encouragement. Thanks, Mary

mast stepping procedure

Mary, There should have been two wires with pelican hooks and t-bail on them that are about 5 to 6 feet long when you got the boat from the previous owner. There should be two slots one on port and one on starboard up from the base of the mast about five to six feet. The two wires attach with the t-bails at the mast and then the pelican hooks attach at the safty rail infront of the mast. There is a small hook at the base of the rail. It forms a triangle with the mast and the wires and keeps the mast from swinging side to side until the shourds take over. I would look around in the boat for them. I hope this helps. It is almost impossible to raise without them. You can make them with parts from West Marine. I don't know the length of the wires but can measure mine this weekend at the boat or you can post a message asking someone that has there boat at home to measure.

My manual says...

I have a H23.5 but the manual covers the 26 as well. It says: Mast Raising Bridal Wires (two) 1/8" 1x19 SS wire T-Ball and Pelican Hook ends Length 5'-11" measured inside of T-Ball to center of Pelican hook.

Side shrouds

If you don't have the side shrouds described by Carl above, you can get a new set from Seco South, in Largo FL. Call Mike at Hunter parts for the contact info. I assume you have the Gin Pole--if not, Mike can help with that too.

Mary

The fellows here are right on the mark. There are two wires with T ball studds at one end and the other end with pelican hooks. You can call Seco South and ask for Jean. Phone is 727-536-1924. She can help. You probably have a Z spar mast. You will need a base which you will need to contact Julian at US spars phone is 386-462-3760

What holes in mast?

I've read the archives and recent letters with interest. Just purchsed a Hunter 25.5 and it does not have the mast raising pole; the cable "bridle" or the holes in the mast that have been referred to several times. However, my biggest concern is when I unstep the mast there will be so much of it extending over the stern it seems that it would be very unstable and difficult to unhook at the pivot point on the step?

Order a manual Mary

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Order a copy of the Owner's Manual from Mike when you call Hunter (800-771-5556 follow the prompt for retail parts order). I've said this many times in response to various postings. There is a wealth of information in it. I made copies of the mast raising and lowering procedures and follow it like a check list when I raise and lower the mast since I do it so infrequently. It gives you all the specifications for most everything on the boat. Whatever isn't in the manual, Hunter or the Godfather can answer for you. PLEASE order the manual and save yourself some heartache next time. Good Luck, Jonathan Costello Heeling Powers

The mast raising system (to the best of my knowledge) is only on the water ballast boats (19, 23.5, 240, 26, 260). There is someone out there on the forum that has copied the system for a 23.

I have unstepped my mast on my 25.5 many times. The mast will sit right on the pulpit once you lower it down. Then after it is resting on the pulpit remove the remaining pin and repostiion the mast. If you pick up the mast step and walk the whole mast towards the forward pulpit the mast will sit in the forward pulpit very nicely.
