I'm back. Thank you for your help with the back stay/main sheet rigging. It's all taken care of. A couple more things...

We're having trouble inserting and removing the back pin on the mast step. There is a piece that is in between the mast step and the hatch cover (correct name?). It is held in place with six screws. The back pin doesn't clear this piece easily. Any suggestions???

Also, it looks like the rudder is either up or down (not a kick-up rudder). There's a small hole that looks like it needs some kind of pin to keep the rudder down. There's no pin there now, so the rudder stays in the up position. ???

That boat was designed with a kick up rudder blade. There should be a 3/16" control pendant line that is connected to the upper inside portion of the rudder blade. The line comes up behind a piece of Teak in the rudder head, behind the pintles and exits under the tiller to a self rescue clam cleat mounted about half way on the under side of the tiller. There should also be a 12" piece of 3/16" bungee cord attached to the pendant line inside the head, and a bolt under the tiller on the rudder head. The bungee puts tension on the pendant line when the blade pops up, and this keeps the line from getting caught in between the rudder blade and the inside of the rudder head. It sound confusing doesn't it? There is a small hole in the upper pintle for a stainless steel marine type safety pin to prevent losing the rudder off the stern gudgeons of your boat. Here's some pictures of my rudder off my 222, which is somewhat similar to yours except, I've made a few modifications to it. My tiller is an O'Day 25 tiller, and I added a pendant line to hold the rudder blade in the up position. I sewed a leather chafe protector on the tiller so that I could tie the tiller off when she's at the mooring. The pin on the tiller is for my autopilot.
