Mast Paint

HelloThe paint at the bottom of the mast on my ODay 25 is beginning to peel. What type of paint would you recommend to use. Will something like Rust-o-leum suffice? Was just going to do a quick repair to hold until I step the mast at the end of the season.Thank you

Renom2 - I painted my mast a number of years ago. You are supposed to use a special primer for aluminum (can't remember the name right now but it is typically a green colour) but I had a lot of difficulty finding it and ..... it is expensive.So I used a standard primer for metal and then rustoleum - that was 4 years ago. So far it has worked great ..... there are a couple of blisters where lines run or the paint has been nicked but overall I was very happy with the performance of the Rustoleum.Since its sailing time and we are all trying to splash our boats ..... I'd give it a shot and see how you like it. Good luckJames

Aluminum primer

The normally recommended primer for aluminum is zinc-chromate. It has a distinctive yellowish-green colour. Should be able to get it at Home Depot or any similar outlet. Rust-Oleum is a good product, but I think it's intended to use on ferrous metals. Most paint manufacturers have on-line sites which can give you their recommendations for painting aluminum.
