I just purchased a '79 C30. Love the boat but the mast "clangs" to the point of driving be crazy! Does anyone have any ideas as to how this problem is fixed, short of stepping the mast?

Noise

Try putting the halyards some place besides straight down along the mast. Secure them to a lifeline stanchion and/or bow pulpit. Snug them up slightly. In fact, to do otherwise is considered ill mannered in every marina that I have ever been in. Making noise keeps your neighbors awake at night. Paul

Real Simple Remedy

Try to forego attaching the halyard to the top lifeline as this causes undo stress and stretch on the lifeline system when you snug yp the halyard. The simplest remedy for the "slapping halyard" is to tie the end off to the cleat on the mast and take a piece of bungee you can buy with hooks already attached or make you own and about shoulder height place one hook on the halyard and attach the other to the shroud. The bungee should be snug, but not so tight that it may rise up on the shroud. Your simply pulling the halyard away from the mast and its suddenly a beautiful thing! Simple, cheap and effective.
