mast mounting area

Can anyone help? I am considering purchaseing a 1981 ODay 25. Where the mast sits on the top deck there is some ckacking in the fiberglass around the metal plate. Is this serious or just the gel coat. Is this common. Should I stay clear of this vessdel. Thanks

Not uncommon

Things on boats invarriably flex and gelcoat is brittle stuff. So when the rig flexes you get crazing. I would have a surveyor look at any boat I was going to purchase - I ask then to make sure the substrate under the mast step is sound.Justin - O'day Owners' Web
