Mast light deck plug

Has anyone found a good way to extend the wires that come up through the deck? I replaced the plug last year but the light quit working again. They certainly don't give you much to work with. I would like to find a better way to correct the problem. Any Ideas!

Maybe not better, but.....

I'd be interested to get some better ideas myself! After replacing the plug two seasons in a row, I've taken the plug out and caulked the hole in the deck around the wires. My electrical connection for the mast lighting is now via wire nuts, caulked full to prevent water intrusion! This works for me, but I only drop the mast once a season. There must be a more "seamanlike" solution! hahaha

Here's mine

I just did this job yesterday on mine. The deck connection was loose and the light flickered. I bought a new plug and also found that the wires were wayyyyyyy too short to work with. So I bit the bullet and cut the carpet inside the boat to expose the wire from the inside. I then spliced some new wire onto the plug, resealed it on the top of the deck and wire nutted the new wires to the old inside the boat. I now plan to sew up the carpet over the wires inside the boat. Only way I could think to do it.

Wire nuts are not usually recommended for boat wiring, presumably because they can work loose from the boat's constant motion. Marine grade (tinned) crimp connectors are not that expensive, and there are 2-part connectors available that can be unplugged if needed.

Question

I note that you guys are saying every year that it leaks. If you are getting new deck plugs and using the gasket they send,I find that sealing the light plug to the deack with silicon will stop the leakage. Suggest West Marine brand which is the best I have found as it is made by a good mfg. Also, when the light plug is not in use, covere it up so rain will not get into it. Crazy Davew Condon

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I just replaced the original Perko (1987) deck plug with a new one this year! I use that electrical contact grease and have no problems. Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass Ett
