Mast Lateral Dimension (Port to Starboard)

In a couple of weeks I'll be driving Minke (#2505) home and need to
assemble mast supports to go on-deck with the boat on the trailer. I
really want to get the supports right working at home where work is easier.
I plan to keep the mast oriented with the cross section vertical like the
number 0. Can anyone tell me what the smallest dimension
(port-to-starboard) is?? If the spars changed over time Minke is a "second
generation" Vega.

I have just moved mine (by road trailer) last week and found that a piece of timber across the pulpit at the front and a fender on the stern rail supported the mast fine together with a couple of fenders on the coachroof. When lashed tight it had a very slight bend (barely noticeable) and the spreaders were at an angle with a bit of rubber underneath to prevent chafe. ie the mast was laid over at about 45 degrees. I forgot to remove the windex but other than that it was fine.

It was not any fun to tow..... Uk roads are small and my heart was in my mouth most of the way. I am glad I only had to go a few miles. It is wider than I thought and on some of the narrow lanes it was a bit tricky to get past high sided lorries and also avoid trees and hedges and road signs..... never again!

My drive from the Chesapeake to Colorado will be 1,700 miles with lots of
opportunity for everything to vibrate out of position. For that reason
(and my lack of experience) I want to make something stable and stout.

On my Series 2, the mast is 3 5/8" x 5 5/8". If you take a look at my website (3rd grouping of pictures on the s/v Blue Max page), you can see the mast supports that I built out of 4x4" lumber. The guy I bought the boat from had a similar setup that he used when he moved the boat from the US east coast to the west coast and it worked fine. I had to rebuild it because the wood had rotted away. By changing the gap you can have the mast ride on the narrow side or the wide side. I used a router to make the cutouts for the lumber to set more securely on the pulpit and the pushpit. I hope that helps.

Wow.... 1,700 miles - Gordon Bennett that is a journey and a
half!!!!! (my journey was 7 miles and that was enough for me!)
Yes... I am sure something more substantial is required... Good luck
- I hope it all goes well and you have a big car to tow it with!

Hi All

Furthest I towed my Vega was 130 miles, more than enough for me. Worried me
sh**less!
I pay someone who does it professionally now!

I had to tow Blue Max 15 miles to get to my house back when I first started working on it. The worst part was the last 2 miles because I live up in the foothills and had to go back and forth on very narrow roads with lots of turns. When she's finished, I'll have about a 50 mile treck to the ocean.

My biggest fear is whether or not the trailer will hold up. I wanted to get the trailer rebuilt while the boat is on the jack stands, but the jack stands prevent pulling the trailer out. Catch 22

I think my mast is a series II (#1874), you can try out your support fits on my mast if you like. -Tim

IIRC both times we've met we discussed fire sprinklers!! I don't know how
we did that but I think it is amusing. Perhaps we should institutionalize
the discussion.
