Mast / Keel Modification

Would like to know if any H-30 ( 79,80,81) owners know of or have modified the Mast Height and the Fin Keel. I am encountering SLIM water here in Oriental and would like to reduce Fin Keel from 5'3" to under 4ft. I am also considering reducing the mast height by 3 to 4 feet so that I can clear a 45ft bridge between my house and the ICW. Has anyone made any of these modifications or know of anyone that has. My primary concern is the Mast modification since removing 3 to 4 ft will change the geometry above the spreaders. Any thoughts or suggestions from all you Cherubini owners??

Consider the design II

A sailboat is designed as a complete system. Your underwater foil (the keel) is as important as your air foils (the sails and rigging.) Only the designer (or maybe another on with the detailed design info) could predict what the impact of these changes in both major foils would mean for the rest of the boat and it's performance. I know you have to sail the boat in the waters you live in, but you'll need real design support to succeed on this mod. David

Keel comment.

Would not consider either mod. But having compared fin vs. shoal I am sure you know that it is NOT simply a matter of a less deep, but somehow heavier, keel. My H37C shoal draft has a shorter but longer(fore to aft) AND heavier keel. Actually the displacement of the H37C shoal draft is +500# over the fin keel boat. All of this for a 13" difference in draw.

Something to consider...

Joe, As it has been said you may change all the sailing characteristics of the boat. I have considered cutting off a fin keel and mounting a wing to not only compensate for ballast but sailing ability.( for the same shallow water reason.) You may be able to steal a wing design from another boat,have it cast in lead and bolt it on. Not a cheap thing to do. This may move your your sail balance forward or aft. The mast sounds like an expensive project,too. All new standing rigging and sails. I don't think the angle of the stays would change that much and may actually be stronger. My concern would be the net sail area when you are done and the lee or weather helm that may occur. If you like your boat that much and the problems won't go away, why not try.It may take some time and money to balance the helm again. This, I would like to know how it turns out. Just a thought from a non 30 owner. r.w.landau

Interesting proposition, but, what are the costs?

What is the value of the boat, and what would it be worth if it doesn't work? If your boat is in good enough condition to consider these changes, then, it probably would bring a good resale value as is. Since you probably don't want to sell your house to get away from the bridge problem I think I'd look for the boat of my dreams, if, I sold the current boat and took the extra money I would have spent on mods and found a boat that fit these perameters. Ray

Get different boat

I think you would be better off finding a different boat that meets your needs. Both modifications would be very expensive and affect performance and safety of the boat.

Yikes.

Having been (at age 16) on the original R&D team for the Hunter 30 Mk 1, I can say with a certain degree of authority that what Mr Ciccone proposes would require so much DETAILED input from a bona-fide yacht designer/engineer (such as my late father) that I will not encourage him by giving any technical information about it. This kind of modification is simply not undertaken by prudent boat owners and sailors. If you are adamant about achieving the specified bridge clearance and draught the suggestion Rick gives about finding another boat is the only prudent, economical, efficient and safe solution.
